Taiwan is a much under-rated tourist destination and unfortunately not many Western tourists have any idea of the real Taiwan that has captivated us long-term residents. Those that can distinguish Taiwan from Thailand (and clearly none of them work at the Post Office) see Taiwan as an industralized mess. It is a shame because Taiwan has so much to offer and it is far enough off the beaten track that you don’t get the harassement that is so common in other Asian tourist hotspots.
This is by no means a definitive guide to travelling in Taiwan and I would throughly recommend that anyone coming to visit purchases either the Lonely Planet guide or the soon to be available Bradt guide.
